What is Lupus and can Acupuncture help?

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune condition, which can be triggered by sunlight and stress. The symptoms of Lupus are broad ranging and varied. However, one of the classic symptoms and the reason it has been named Lupus (Latin for Wolf) is due to many sufferers having a butterfly shaped rash across their cheeks which is similar to the markings on a wolf’s face.

Typical lupus symptoms are:-

  • joint pain and stiffness
  • extreme tiredness that won’t go away no matter how much you rest
  • skin rashes – often over the nose and cheeks
  • weight loss
  • swollen glands
  • sensitivity to light (causing rashes on uncovered skin)
  • poor circulation in fingers and toes

If you have four or more of these symptoms together you should question whether you have Lupus?

As the symptoms are so varied and can often be intermittent, and mimic many other conditions it can be difficult to gain a Lupus diagnosis. On average it takes 7 years to receive a diagnosis, but once obtained it is important to reduce the triggers and this is where acupuncture may help.

Acupuncture is believed to stimulate the nervous system and cause the release of neurotransmitters. Stimulation of certain acupuncture points has been shown to affect areas of the brain that are known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress and therefore reduced one of the main Lupus triggers as well provide relief if there is joint pain.
